New Memoir, HELL IN PARADISE is Released

On the morning of December 7, 1941, Levi and Matilda Faufata and their family were startled by the whistles of shells and the booming of guns. From their front porch, they could see a cloud of black smoke rising up over Pearl Harbor. Something terrible had happened.

Now 74 years after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Ralph Faufata and his surviving brothers and sisters publish the story of that date which will live in infamy, offering a civilian's perspective, in this new book, "Hell in Paradise: Infamy December 7, 1941" (published by AuthorHouse).

"Hell in Paradise" recounts the harrowing development throughout the two-hour attack, detailing the movements of the fighter planes that swooped over the Faufata home and the attacks the family witnessed. Levi Faufata Sr., a civilian maintenance worker at Pearl Harbor, was called in to work and witnessed much of the chaos firsthand.

Back at the Faufata home, Matilda Faufata and her children - Levi Jr., 14; Matilda, 12; Elsie, 11, Rebecca, 10; and Ralph, 9 - watched the drama unfold. Matilda Faufata and Elsie Miraflor's stories follow the developments on the home front and the tragic death of the oldest daughter, Matilda, who was fatally hit by shrapnel from a nearby car crash.

Evocative and eye-opening, "Hell in Paradise" captures the chaos and uncertainty of that fateful day. Through their parents and sister's writings, the family hopes to convey the emotions and devastation that the citizens of Honolulu experienced.

Ralph Faufata lives and writes in Kapolei, Hawaii. The Faufata family still lives on the island of Oahu where Pearl Harbor is located. "Hell in Paradise" was published to honor their parents, Levi M. Faufata and Matilda E. Wilson Faufata who have now passed as well as sister Matilda K. Faufata, who was tragically killed on December 7, 1941.
