Author Betty June Gilliland explores her past and ancestral stories that brought her to where she is today in her new memoir, "Destiny's Tapestry: I Walk This Path" (published by iUniverse).

"This book has a lot of the spirit with which most humans are endowed," Gilliland says. "There is sadness and laughter. There is history and human interest."

Gilliland had a tough childhood growing up in Alabama with her somewhat dysfunctional family. Her book describes how the people around whom she was raised left an impression on her that would push her to become the woman she is today.

Each chapter of "Destiny's Tapestry" functions as its own story, but all of them come together to tell Gilliland's unique story - a story of overcoming rough beginnings to ultimately become who she was meant to be.

"No matter where we come from or who we are," Gilliland says, "we can and must ever strive to be the best we can be. We set our goals before us and with unwavering determination we can achieve."
