With the latest installment of the "Savonnerie Masterpiece" (published by AuthorHouse) saga, Samantha Pague explores life during the time of the French Revolution, the Jacobin Club, Robespierre and his Reign of Terror, drawing parallels between past and present and showing how survival is possible during hard times, economic crisis, revolution and war. She does this through the story of the titular work of art, raising awareness for the carpets produced in the Savonnerie Manufactory and the hardworking people dedicated to their craft.
"Savonnerie Masterpiece: War: The Master of Revenge" continues from where the previous installments left off. This time, the nation is plunged in economic hardship and political violence. Just as the paintings of revolutionary Jacobin member Jacques-Louis David, such as "The Lictors Bring to Brutus the Bodies of His Sons," captured the spirit of the dark time, Pague shows how the "Savonnerie Masterpiece" embodies those struggling to survive whilst being caught in the conflict's crossfire.
Readers will see how one family's hard work, dedication to their art, knowledge and skill with the carpet-making craft enable them to weather the nightmare around them. The diction she utilizes in her writing also cites the dialect written and spoken by commoners of the time, showing the contrast in education between the noble class, priests and bishops, and the genre of the third class or third tier. Readers will learn of the creation, rescue and repair of a Savonnerie carpet depicting the Norman conquest of William the Conqueror, a piece made in the 1070s that was rediscovered in 1729 and then, during the French Revolution in the 1790s, confiscated as public property. The tapestry becomes another thread - like the characters and France itself - interweaved in Pague's narrative.
"Everyone is looking for economic survival; the collecting of objects d'art - rugs - carpets - can bring economic survival," Pague says, conveying her believe that during times of revolt and the possibility of war, "people must gather their talents and use them for survival during critical times."
