ANN ARBOR, Mich., June 16, 2016 /PRNewswire/ "Four Ways to Ensure Leadership Commitment to Ergonomics" is the third in a series of new e-books about the five steps required to build and sustain a successful ergonomics process. These steps make up Humantech's Engagement Modela framework for companies to follow when starting, improving, or reinvigorating a workplace ergonomics process. Certified Professional Ergonomists Walt Rostykus and Kent Hatcher explain step three in the Model, Leadership.

Gaining the support and endorsement of top leaders in an organization is essential for a program, process, or initiative. In fact, from benchmarking and working with leading companies, we know that when top leaders endorse, integrate, and actively pay attention to an ergonomics improvement process, goals are achieved.

There are four best practices for engaging and ensuring commitment by your leaders. First, engage the right people (leaders) to ensure support of the team members (their roles and responsibilities are outlined in the preceding e-book, "Three Ways to Establish a Strong Foundation for your Ergonomics Process"). The leadership team must be comprised of the following:

  1. Sponsor: Top manager in the organization will drive improvement goals, track metrics, establish resources, and hold his or her direct reports accountable for MSD risk reduction.
  2. Operations: He or she will ensure the process in integrated into day-to-day operations.
  3. Quality/Continuous Improvement: This person understands process management and can integrate the ergonomic improvement process into the existing system used for improvement.
  4. Engineering: Ergonomic design guidelines must be included in engineering projects to prevent the introduction of MSD risk in new equipment, tools, and workstations.
  5. Human Resources: Performance expectations for ergonomics must be in the current appraisal process to hold people accountable for achieving risk reduction metrics. This person must understand how information from the ergonomics improvement process can assist them with injury management, Workers' Compensation, and return to-work activities.

The remaining three best practices as well as other e-books in this series are available from Humantech's website.

The next step in the Engagement Model, Deployment, is the topic of the fourth e-book in the series to be released in September accompanied by a live webinar on the topic on September 13th.
