New Collection of Short Stories is Announced

In Walking in the Shadows and The Heir, local author Laurene highlights the role that fortune plays in our lives and the lives of her protagonists. As the volume unfolds, destinies are slowly revealed, showing how each character deals with adversity, grief, and loss.

In Walking in the Shadows, Laurene brilliantly portrays a pianist struggling with the loss of his family and seeking to ease his deep emotional turmoil. As he contemplates suicide, the beautiful and wealthy Sarah Jane appears - or rather reappears - in his life. As the two grow closer, Sandy wonders if the providential return of his old acquaintance is the answer to his prayers. Yet something gnaws at his mind - can Sarah Jane really be all that she seems?

Laurene's second story, The Heir, is simultaneously the story of one man, a married couple, and an entire family. Preparing to take his final priestly vows, a young man is smitten by a beautiful woman. Torn between service to God, his family's wishes, and the power of his own emotions, he makes a decision that will have repercussions for generations. Using multiple narrators, Laurene masterfully weaves together religion, love, and fate to create a composite portrait that will linger in the mind.

About the author
Laurene is a British author and poet who enjoys reading her verse aloud to audiences. Her poems, some of which have been published in pamphlets, have been described as "extremely powerful with a political or moral undertone." Walking in the Shadows and The Heir is her first book of short stories.
