NORTHVILLE, Mich.

A spunky young Doberman learns that growing up always involves a few missteps and tumbles in Mary Rhee's new children's book, "Elwood Doberman, Jr." (published by WestBow Press), illustrated by Elisa Chavarri.

Spirited Doberman, Elwood Doberman, Jr., loves nothing more than whizzing around his neighborhood on his sleek yellow bike. A popular teenager who is head of the pack, Elwood is always up for fun and games. But when it comes to doing chores around the house or feeding his fish, Elwood doesn't want to work like a dog and is quick with an excuse to get out of work.

When Elwood's parents finally reach their breaking point with their wayward son, they give him one last chance to prove himself by holding a job, but Elwood wriggles out of that too. After his parents discover his charade, they send Elwood to West Pointer Academy, a doggie boot camp. Will Elwood ever shape up?

Packed with colorful illustrations, Rhee hopes that "Elwood Doberman, Jr." will make children and parents view Elwood's antics with humor and understanding. Readers are invited to follow along as Elwood embarks on exciting new adventures that transform him from a young rebellious pup into a responsible, proud and happy hound.
