In their upcoming book, The Ghoul on the Stool, authors John Russo and Joseph and Michael Grasso take children on an entertaining and superbly illustrated look at the unique tradition of Halloween. Along with the book a companion Ghoul on the Stool doll will also be marketed.
The three brothers behind the creations are parents of children fascinated when autumn leaves fall and Halloween decorations begin to appear.
"None of us ever completely outgrow the thrill of Halloween," says John Russo. "Nor the delicious candy treats children receive as part of the slightly macabre Halloween pageantry. But young tears can come if favorite treats mysteriously disappear from their baskets."
To compensate for this the legend of the Ghoul on the Stool was born, he adds.
A plush doll based on the book's main character, a guardian ghoul in charge of yummy treats, has been created as a symbol of all that's best about Halloween.
To publish and market their new book and doll the authors are taking advantage of crowdfunding using the website Kickstarter.com-which has provided funding for thousands of new products and services nationwide. People funding Kickstarter projects may receive tangible incentives in exchange for startup help including, in this case, autographed copies of the new book or even a complimentary deluxe Halloween party.
"Sharing the expense of getting our book into young readers' hands will mean giving up a bit of our future profits," Russo says. "But crowdfunding will also shorten the prep time needed, and so it's a win-win situation."
The brothers' Kickstarter campaign will extend through November 1, 2014.
