FREMONT, Calif., Jan. 15, 2016 /PRNewswire-iReach/ It has been "an uphill fight all the way", but the California stem cell agency is developing therapies to defeat diabetes, cancer, blindness, paralysis and more, says Bay Area author Don C. Reed in "Stem Cell Battles: Proposition 71 and Beyond: How Ordinary People Can Fight Back Against the Crushing Burden of Chronic Diseasewith a Posthumous Foreword by Christopher Reeve".

The need is huge. According to federal statistics, "133 million Americans have one or more chronic diseases." In money terms, "chronic disease cost America $2.3 trillion last year, more than all federal income taxes put together and you cannot put a number on suffering," says the author.

But California is fighting back: with the $3 billion program built by Proposition 71, the citizen initiative begun and led by visionary philanthropist Bob Klein.

In a series of short stories, the reader sees how the agency works to grow cures for "incurable" disease and disability.

With 12 new research facilities, top biomed scientists and strong job creation, California has been called the center of the stem cell universe.

"This is how cure will come," says Reed, "Step by step: protecting the scienitists' freedom to research, and providing the funds so they can do their work; that is the California way."

Early reviews of the book:

"...warm, optimistic, determined...Stem Cell Battles is a prime example of how a small group of people can bring about significant change for so many...valuable for that reason alone, but .the human stories Reed includes make it more so."J.G. Stinson, FOREWORD Reviews, 5 hearts

"As the director of the Harvard Stem Cell Summit and Christopher Reeve's brother, I know firsthand the importance of popular support for medical research. Don Reed's book is a great overview easy to read, full of good stories, and the science is accurate."Brock Reeve

"This is a book you might start off by reading a little of, and then find you can't put down! ..quick pace, open and honest descriptions of painful challenges and temporary setbacks...colorful descriptions, victorious moments..." Mary Wooley, President , Research!America

"Key acquisition, not to be missed...offers rare blend of science geared for lay readers, discussions of political struggles surrounding the science, and inspirational stories...highly recommended"D. Donovan, Senior Book Reviewer, Midwest Book Reviews.
