Imagine the impact that a global body of engaged youth would have on our communities and the world.

Former teacher Sandy McKane imagines a shift away from focusing on our problems to the creation of concrete solutions that engage children beginning in kindergarten. In her new book, "Of the People, By the People, For the People: A National K-12 Service Initiative," McKane envisions education incorporating real life problem solving and meaningful contribution for our youth.

McKane's initiative would bring together communities and schools while promoting a national curriculum focusing on leadership, using youth managed projects that foster communication among young people as they track outcomes and demonstrate the impact of their work.

"The initiative provides this kind of experience for all of our children," said McKane. "If our children are involved in constructive work with their peers as children, they will continue in constructive work with their peers as adults."

This progressive and expansive look at service learning is structured in three parts. First, "Of the People" includes resources we have already developed. Next, "By the People" outlines what we can create, specifically project organization and impact. Lastly, "For the People" highlights the overall structure and rationale of the initiative.

This fresh perspective on world leadership will appeal to government personnel, parents, teachers and those who want to better their communities.
