AGOURA HILLS, Calif. -
In "Carnage Asada," decorated war hero and former elite Swamp Ranger Mordecai Smith finds himself in a VR debtor's prison, thanks to a failed escape attempt with mayhem and the loss of millions in company profits. In this new novel by author L. Michael Haller, Smith and another prisoner find themselves digitally dropped into the middle of two warring clans in the Age of the Shoguns. The two men must fight to pay off their debt to society, with every move and sound recorded to entertain those at home watching the Virtual Reality spectacle.
This modern-day Samurai adventure pits two master swordsmen - a mystic blind man and a dark Ronin thrown into the fight at the last moment. The two unlikely allies must work together to save a naïve warlord's son from becoming the ultimate bait, but will their unparalleled skill be enough? Back in the real world, Smith's public defender hasn't given up on him and fights for her client's rights. "Carnage Asada" puts a modern-day spin on the concept of time travel, integrating the world of video gaming and an imaginative narrative that highlights the spectacle of feudal Japan and its tradition of martial arts.
Author L. Michael Haller is no stranger to the action genre. He is the former general manager of Dreamworks Interactive for Electronic Arts, serving as an executive producer of video games, where his teams developed the critically acclaimed Medal of Honor series. Two Academy of Interactive Science awards for Fighting Game of the Year have gone to his WWE and WCW wrestling games. Before joining the gaming world, Haller worked with Japan's leading publisher to introduce anime to the world. The Streamline Pictures board member wrote and produced the English language version of "Akira" and led its global distribution.
Haller began as a diplomat, posted to the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, where he befriended Shintaro Katsu, known in the West as Zatoichi, the Blind Swordsman, Japan's leading actor. The author was a McCormick Scholar at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. He also wrote the eBook "Starzan."
