In “Finding Hope in the Crisis: A Therapist’s Perspective on Love, Loss and Courage,” Matarese uses her background in psychotherapy to explain concepts and the underpinnings of modern relationships, focusing on one’s attachment style, which she calls “relationship maps,” that often lead people down the road of ‘Love’s Labor’s Lost’ and parlays into crises such as divorce, infidelity, manipulation and human loneliness.
The book uses analogies from classical stories such as the tale of Cupid and Psyche, which teaches readers about the legacy of gender inequality in relationships, as well as Mythology, e.g., demonstrating the development of narcissism, both malignant and benign, through the Greek myth of Narcissus. These stories show readers how to identify unhealthy relationship patterns stemming from years of conditioning and in turn, develop healthy relationships with themselves and their partners.
Matarese also integrates clinical case studies with sports examples, e.g. teaching the stages of relationships in parallel with the stages of a sporting season: from the excitement of "opening day" through the ups and downs of many seasons together, culminating into the eventual end of an era. These appear as "featured stories" throughout the book.
“My goal is to help readers find their inner anchor of hope and courage so they can free themselves to be authoritative in their choices and lives and have emotionally open and satisfying relationships,” Matarese said. “Through my work as a psychotherapist, I want to enable readers to understand the crises of ‘Love’s Labor’s Lost’ and how, through psychotherapy, they can rise from the ashes of their crisis by healing their inner attachment style, re-creating their relationship map, and getting back onto the road of ‘Love’s Labor’s Won.’”
In “Finding Hope in the Crisis: A Therapist’s Perspective on Love, Loss, and Courage,” readers will learn how they can live and love fully, once they understand how their relational patterns lead them to their crisis in the first place. Not only will this book empower the reader to survive seemingly unbearable pain, more importantly, it will teach them how to thrive in their lives because of it.
