New Book Uses Poetry to Combat Life's Complexities Image As a private physician, Dr. Theodore M. Wandzilak is often confronted by the seriousness of life and the inevitability of death. Yet, he has found a way to confront those moments by turning them into poetry and reminiscing on his personal sanctuary. Tucked away in Montauk, New York is home to the famous East Deck Motel, a building where Wandzilak has spent much of his life and often returns to find peace. Wandzilak recounts 40 years of life, weaving in his experiences at the historic motel, in his poetic memoir "The East Deck Motel and Selected Poetry."

"The East Deck Motel and Selected Poetry" is a compilation of various poetry styles that capture the full life of Wandzilak-from romantic experiences and bouts of lust to personal challenges and tales of woe. His work is broken into three distinct sections that cover his life as a young adult, his career as a physician and his fatherly perspective. Many of the expressive stories take place in the East Deck Motel, a real-life historic motel that was built in the 1950s.

"What is written here is a natural expression of my everyday life," Wandzilak said. "The dark side of life is often reflected in a humorous way and the events that might appear joyful do not have a happy ending. The East Deck Motel and Selected Poetry is my way of balancing challenges with moments of joy, laughter, and simplicity. This is a poetic memoir with an ironic twist."
