New Book, THE CAROLINE, by John K. Sutherland is Released

This story, set about 1870 just after the Civil War, takes place mostly on the Mississippi River and in New Orleans. It follows the journey of lovers torn apart by family violence, leaving one of them to believe that the other is dead. The young lady, Caroline, runs off to Europe to immerse herself in teaching while her lover whom she had given up for dead, recovers from the wounds suffered at the hands of her family, and begins his desperate search for her, while striving to avoid her one surviving brother and father. When the young couple serendipitously reunites under very trying circumstances, after five years apart, she does not recognize him. He is both relieved and disappointed, but is a patient and understanding man.

As they travel up the Mississippi together upon the boat named after her, she becomes the target of attempted murder, herself. She also learns with considerable anguish that she was the subject of a gambling wager by her surviving and murderously inclined brother, seeking any way he can to be rid of her. That game cost him his life, though fate had already decreed that he would die after what had happened five years earlier. With her last family member justifiably dead after that poker game, and at the hands of the same man who had earlier killed her oldest brother and then her father, she inherits the family estate. As she recovers her memories, she recognizes that the man who had won her in that game, is the very same man who had also won her and her heart in years past.

Readers will join the two lovers as they go through attempted murder, retribution, a gradual awakening to love once more, and then sudden recognition of one important, life altering discovery for her - his true identity.
This tale will make hearts flutter both at the idea of romance torn apart by the machinations of a dysfunctional and violent family, and the ways in which true love will not long be denied. "The Caroline" is a well told love story that will make readers hold on to the true essence of love as it is gradually rediscovered out of the hopelessness that had taken over in the heroine's darkened society.
