Followers of the George Zimmerman trial have a new source for understanding self defense laws, including the Stand Your Ground law. Andrew F. Branca, Esq., the foremost expert in self defense law, this week released The Law of Self Defense (2nd ed., 2013), a comprehensive look at how self defense laws are applied in real-world cases across all 50 states.

Written for armed citizens concerned about the potential legal implications of defending themselves, The Law of Self Defense covers both fundamental legal topics and specific cases. It fully explains the right response to dangerous situations and the implications of incorrect decisions.

Specifically, the book:

  • Puts a spotlight on the gray areas of self defense laws
  • Dispels the dangerous myths of self defense that are believed at great peril
  • Describes how the courts apply self defense laws in actual cases across all 50 states
  • Reveals the hard-to-see "cliff edge" where people inadvertently lose the right to claim self defense

"While the release of The Law of Self Defense is timed exactly with the Zimmerman trial, the book's lessons and principles apply far beyond today's headlines to any legal action involving the use of defensive force," said Andrew F. Branca, Esq., the book's author. "Without sufficient knowledge, too many people who exercise their 2nd Amendment rights in self defense fall victim to the legal system and suffer the multi-year process of arrest, trial, and sentencing."

Branca, a Massachusetts lawyer and NRA-certified firearms instructor, has been blogging extensively on the Zimmerman trial. His posts have caught the eye of those concerned with a potential legal implications of having to use force in self defense. Since the trial's start, he has been quoted in the Washington Post and Chicago Tribune, and has gained over 2500 Twitter followers (@LawSelfDefense). He is currently covering Florida v. Zimmerman on the blog Legal Insurrection.
