ANNAPOLIS, Md.
In his readings of the New Testament, Tilden Atwell has noted that Jesus possesses an ambivalent nature. For all that many sections of the New Testament speak of forgiveness and boundless love, Jesus also speaks of sending the wicked to eternal punishment. How is it that a person could ever deserve infinite punishment for finite crimes? This question is the seed from which he wrote his book, "The Dark Side of Jesus" (published by Xlibris).
Leaving out any religious influence, Atwell gives a penetrating study of the character of Jesus by only examining what he says or does in the New Testament. Putting aside all previous indoctrination from family, church or others, he vividly shows readers what can be gained by reading scripture in this manner. His book's first two paragraphs begin a journey where a new Jesus eventually emerges, one who is a very powerful figure, but, at the same time, one who is contradictory in many ways.
An excerpt from the book reads:
After reading this book, I urge the reader to reread the New Testament in a critical way. Forget what you were taught and read as if you had never heard a word about Christianity. Pretend you are from another planet, and let your conscience and your own individual ethical judgment guide you about what is right or wrong. There is a voice within you that will help you decide your own version of this beautiful story. For it is a beautiful story of love and sacrifice, but you will also see that it has been tampered with by advocates of their own beliefs, be they the original four Gospel writers, whose facts and points of view can be quite different and contradictory, or monks copying manuscripts or officials of the church.
