In his readings of the New Testament, Tilden Atwell has noted that Jesus possesses an ambivalent nature. For all that many sections of the New Testament speak of forgiveness and boundless love, Jesus also speaks of sending the wicked to eternal punishment.How is it that a person could ever deserve infinite punishment for finite crimes? This question is the seed from which he wrote his book, "The Dark Side of Jesus" (published by Xlibris).

Leaving out any religious influence, Atwell gives a penetrating study of the character of Jesus by only examining what he says or does in the New Testament. Putting aside all previous indoctrination from family, church or others, he vividly shows readers what can be gained by reading scripture in this manner. His book's first two paragraphs begin a journey where a new Jesus eventually emerges, one who is a very powerful figure, but, at the same time, one who is contradictory in many ways.

About the Author
Tilden Atwell was born in Annapolis, Md., and had a happy childhood fishing, swimming and crabbing in Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. He was educated in public schools and the University of Maryland. Atwell spent seven years in the US Air Force, mostly in Europe and Iceland, and wrote letters, security bulletins, manuals, and nearly became a military historian. After the Air Force, he spent 32 years as an educator and loved his job of selecting and promoting books. He married another teacher, Shirley H. Atwell, who shared his passion for books and reading. They have a daughter, Anne, who is also a writer. They still live in Annapolis, Md., and are still reading, writing, and talking about books.
