The book gives an overview of the history of Mexico and the southwest; and how the Spanish arrived and migrated to the area of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. There is discussion on the isolation of the population; the genocide of the natives and how they lost their families, language and identity. There is also genealogical mapping that readers will find interesting in working on their own family history.
“This is a history of the southwestern United States, and covers a lot of genealogical information for the families that had ancestors in the Sangre de Cristo mountain range,” Martinez says. “The book documents the Native Americans who lost their identity and languages and still do not know the tribe they are from.”
Martinez hopes that through the book, readers will want to research their own family history, record the oral history of their older family members so that their descendants will know about their family and start their own family trees.
