New Book Offers Advice on Alzheimer's Disease

According to author Rebecca Jarrard, R.N., more than six million people have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's or a related dementia in the U.S. More than 73 percent of them are being cared for at home by family members. It is to those home caregivers that she offers "When Alzheimer's Touches A Family: A Layperson's Guide to Caring for and Understanding the Person with Alzheimer's or Dementia" (published by AuthorHouse).

Although the book does contain some medical language, Jarrard has written her text in a way intended to be accessible to the non-medical professional reader. Largely written in first person, as the except below shows, "When Alzheimer's Touches A Family" removes many of the confusing medical terms that obfuscate the issue.

This book is in two parts; the first will explain the Alzheimer's disease and related dementia while the second part will deal with the care of these fragile people and their behaviors."

Jarrard's mission with "When Alzheimer's Touches A Family" is largely educational. "I want readers to take away a compassion for the Alzheimer's patient and a knowledge of the disease that will enable them to be better caregivers," she says.
