"(My book) challenges thousands of years of human understanding and offers a new and alternative view of dignity-a topic of increasing prominence in contemporary international discourse," Tunstall says.
Although based on his original doctoral dissertation, Tunstall has modified "On the Origin of Dignity" to be more accessible for the layperson. It offers an account of why dignity exists, where it comes from and how people get it. The book integrates previous arguments about dignity and describes dignity as "an interpersonal co-creation that occurs between two human beings."
Tunstall contends that although some people do not acknowledge dignity's existence, everyone has a right to dignity and "Each of us has a personal responsibility as the co-creator of not only our own but another's dignity to consciously and deliberately engage in the process."
