New Book Explores Leadership in Community Colleges

Leading within a community college setting and observing the culture of the community college inspired author Dr. Evangeline Smith to expand her knowledge about the community colleges leadership role in the community. This motivated her to publish the findings of her important research study in "Minority Leadership in Community Colleges; What Community College Boards, Legislators, and Community Citizens Need to Know: Who's Leading at Your Community College?"(published by Trafford Publishing).

This book is a quantitative and qualitative research study about selected community colleges in North Carolina and how each community college identified and selected future leaders with emphasis on opportunities for minorities to become future leaders in upper level management roles. It reveals community colleges consideration for social, racial, economic and political/cultural nuances for developing leaders. It also divulges provocative information that determines racial parity, similarity and racial equality between the service population and enrollment demographics in comparison to the number of employees and administrators based on the ethnicity representation.

"This book exposes the leadership culture of selected community colleges in North Carolina and offers insight into practices of how community college presidents select future leaders," Smith explains. "It reveals how minorities are underrepresented in some community colleges in upper management levels. It also provides recommendations to community college presidents as they address the impending leadership shortage in community colleges due to "baby-boomers' retirement."

Through this book, Smith hopes readers will be able to understand the important role of the community college and know how to demand change in community college culture where student enrollment is not reflected in leadership teams.

About the Author
Dr.Evangeline Smith has worked in the education field for over 20 years. She has worked in higher education arena as a leader and mentor for the past 15 years. She supervised over 65 employees and worked closely with students to encourage them to achieve their goals and become lifelong learners. She completed her PhD in Philosophy of Higher Education Leadership at Capella University in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She and her husband, Charles, have two daughters and one son, all adults. She resides with her husband in North Hills in Raleigh.
