SCARSDALE, NY - Financial planning is more anxiety-provoking once you hit 55 because making a financial mistake when you're young is more fixable than one at 55 or 75.

Now there's a comprehensive book covering financial planning during those critical years: Looking Ahead: Life, Family, Wealth and Business After 55.

Written by the financial planners at Palisades Hudson Financial Group, it covers the gamut of hard and soft planning topics. The former include chapters on state and federal income and estate taxes; investing; and financing long-term care. Soft topics include financial relationships with adult children, planning for incapacity, estate planning, retirement planning, retiring abroad, philanthropy, starting a business after 55, and helping grandchildren.

"The part of financial planning that covers your personal goals is sometimes overlooked, but it should come before creating an investment or tax plan," says firm president Larry Elkin, 57.

The book covers planning for life's certainties (taxes), and its uncertainties, such as your future health and lifespan. Quick notes, diagrams and an index let readers find what they need.

Do I need life insurance? How much and what type? What's the best way to set my asset investment allocation and keep it on track? Is long-term care insurance a good buy? Do I need to be concerned with estate taxes? What will happen to my digital estate when I die? What are the pros and cons of 529 plans and Coverdell ESAs for education funding? What steps must I take to start a business?

These are just some of the questions where readers will find expert guidance from the authors, most of whom are Certified Financial Planner (CFP) professionals; some are also CPAs or Enrolled Agents (IRS-qualified tax professionals).
