NEW YORK

The seed of author Laura Spearman's new book, "Have You Ever?" (published by Trafford Publishing), began with poems she would sing to her child to relax him. With some encouragement from friends, Spearman decided to publish one of her rhyming stories.

"Have You Ever?" is narrated by the protagonist, a six-year-old boy. An imaginative child, he travels through a series of wild, whimsical and wondrous adventures all taking place in his mind. Throughout his journeys, he encounters an array of unique animals including a dancing elephant, a friendly bear, an ostrich with a stretchy neck and many others.

"The overall theme of 'Have You Ever?' is to just dream - in as big a way and with as little regard for convention as possible," Spearman says.

An excerpt from "Have You Ever?":

"Have you ever seen a camel with
a roller-coaster hump?
Did you buckle up and ride his back
while shouting, "THUMPY-LUMP!"?
Did his frizzy fur fly backwards as you
screeched down each steep hill?
Did you throw your head back
laughing merrily at every thrill?"
