MT. CARMEL, Ill.

Author Deedee Reynolds' community held two festivals to honor the fictional masked crime fighter, the Lone Ranger, played by Brace Beemer in the 1930s radio show. After meeting his daughter, the late Barbara Beemer Daniel, hearing her memories of Brace, and remembering how he faithfully listened to the radio show as a boy, Reynolds decided to tell the story of "The Man Behind the Mask" (published by Xlibris).

Brace was a native son of Mt. Carmel who lived the life he portrayed in the radio show. After the adventures of boyhood, he would come of age and serve his country in a war the author describes as a clash between the mechanized world and the quixotic age of Tom Sawyer, an age that Brace himself lived in.

In the aftermath, Reynolds juxtaposes the buildup of tensions leading to the Second World War and the debut of a radio show on a little known station - WXYZ in Detroit. As the masked vigilante galloped into the lives of thousands of children around the world, Reynolds shows how the Lone Ranger - and the man who portrayed him - became a savior of sorts for those hoping to find someone to defend them against the growing tide of war.

"Most of us have at least heard of the Lone Ranger, but did not come to know "The Man Behind the Mask." This is the story of one - the most famous radio Lone Ranger," says Reynolds.

This book shows how a boy can turn into a man and develop good traits, becoming a source of light and leaving a positive impact in the lives of thousands of people.
