“I want readers to feel like my book has given them a glimpse of Jesus as he really was, as if they had been given the chance to witness the Jesus story as it really happened. I also want readers to appreciate that there’s a lot more to the Jesus story than what they’ve been taught by the churches,” Vadok says.
“Nazarene Dream” reconstructs the Jesus story, basing it on historical plausibility rather than theological orthodoxy, and presents a vision of the momentous life of a purely human Jesus who gradually develops a reputation for being supernaturally gifted – a reputation that explodes to its fullest mythical extent only after his death. It also tells the story of a proto-Christian rabbi in Antioch who lives through the war between Rome and Judea (66–70 B.C.) and tries to make sense of the catastrophic defeat of the Jews in light of his own Jewish-Christian beliefs. This rabbi, named Ariel, struggles to keep his post-war congregation faithful and finally writes a book (eventually to become known as the Gospel of Mark) that explains the war in terms that his community of early Christians can accept without abandoning their faith in their messiah.
“Readers will discover an exciting ‘new’ way to interpret the Gospel of Mark that has lain dormant and forgotten since the time of the Roman Empire,” the author adds. “‘Nazarene Dream’ invites people to look at religion in general, and Christianity in particular, from an alternative, open-minded perspective. It challenges people to question all orthodoxies.”
