JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind.

The Southeastern Conference (SEC) of collegiate football was racially segregated in 1947 - the year the NAACP made an appeal to the world on racism before the United Nations - and the year Nathaniel Northington was born. However, throughout his adolescence Northington continued to fall prey to the effects of bigotry and hatred. But due to the academic achievements and athletic skill he demonstrated in high school, he became the first African-American to receive and sign an athletic scholarship to the University of Kentucky.

Northington tells his life story of overcoming racism in the realm of collegiate football in his new autobiographical memoir, "Still Running: The Autobiography of Kentucky's Nate Northington, the First African American Football Player in the Southeastern Conference" (published by iUniverse).

Within the pages of "Still Running," Northington relays his experiences as the first black football player in the SEC. His story includes retellings of his and other black football players' struggles throughout the civil rights movement and how they reached milestones in the athletic and social realms.

"I want readers to get a glimpse of how African-Americans sacrificed their lives to make this country a better place for everyone," Northington says. "Many even gave their lives to make the playing field equal. With the help and grace of almighty God, we are able to overcome all obstacles and be victorious and pave the way for others to follow."
