Author Ray Lemmon shares the story of his life and career as an airline pilot and airplane hobbyist. Starting with his Depression-era childhood, Lemmon tells of growing up during World War II, serving in the Army during the Korean conflict, and finally achieving his dream of becoming an airline pilot with Capital and United Airlines during the emergence of the Jet Age - the mid-century years of growth and turbulence for the airline industry - in "Not Flying Alone: An Autobiography" (published by AuthorHouse).
Lemmon writes about owning, restoring and flying vintage airplanes and his adventures with collectible cars, vintage boats, trailers and motor homes. Readers will be privy to the pranks airline pilots play and the author's cross-country flights in small planes and big ones, and a terror-filled near-disaster over the Pocono Mountains in Tannersville, Pa.
An excerpt from "Not Flying Alone":
It's 4 a.m. and I'm wide awake.
"Write to Mark Hanson." Again and again.
Margaret is after me to do something, but what? I don't know Mark Hanson; of course, I do know about him. He's the presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America; I read his commentary each month on the last page of The Lutheran Magazine. Margaret knew him from a chance meeting at Chautauqua Institute during an annual gathering of Lutherans that meets every August.
