Finding mysterious and crumbling papers in an old chest in a reputedly haunted garage is just one adventure for young Bo Homer. Just as Bo and Katie, the central characters in this new adventure/love story, frolic on the beach and explore the Okefenokee Swamp - the pages also resonate with a shanty town's dreams. As certain as heroes' tales poignantly weave through the story, at various turns, the tenth-graders' love proves tenuous - just as a horrifying train accident for one of the teenagers almost derails their lives forever.
"Sweet Buttons: A South Georgia & Fernandina Beach Adventure" is set in the 1950s of the segregated South. Many scenes take place on Florida's Amelia Island and in Ware County, Georgia: on Fernandina Beach, once favored by pirates, now famous as a shrimping capital; and in the fictional Juliet's Crossing, a south Georgia railroad hub town. Bo, who lives in California, spends the summer helping in his grandfather's clothing store. In his darkest moments, on his way home, when mercilessly trapped and in peril in the wake of the train crash, including harrowing trips down river rapids, he resolves to protect the papers and relies on sweet memories of the incomparable Katie Ann Reed.
Author B P Wicker grew up in Tampa, Fernandina Beach and Southern California. The former English teacher was a volunteer firefighter in Oregon, and he and his wife now live in Colorado. Wicker dedicated the book, an homage to history, "to the brave men and women of America's armed forces who have worn buttons of valor on shirts, coats, trousers, and caps, bandoliers, straps, and packs for freedom."
