Cruz tells the story of the hardship years he endured after immigrating from Hong Kong to the United States. Determined to change the course of his life, he embarked on a vigorous quest to take charge of his mental, physical, social, and financial life. Cruz’s captivating, and often humorous, narrative of how he developed nine simple guidelines to achieve happiness and success, is rich with powerful lessons for a wide range of audiences.
The guidelines focus on making choices that will help achieve goals. “It’s important to be driven by results, not process,” says Cruz. “When deciding how best to act, focus on evaluating the consequences rather than analyzing the procedure.”
Five of the nine guidelines offer rationales for why one should take a positive approach, especially when confronted with conflict. The remaining four propose using common sense as a course of action and recommend looking at things from diverging perspectives.
Self-acceptance and a positive mental attitude are stressed. Cruz rationalizes why individuals are better off amongst the best, even if they are near the bottom of the group, as connections and opportunities increase by associating with the right people.
