October 18, 2005, was supposed to be one of the happiest days of Pamela Larocque's life with the birth of her second son, Ryken. Instead, she learned that time with her newborn child would be limited when Ryken was diagnosed with non-ketotic hyperglycinemia, a rare genetic disorder. Eleven years after the passing of her child, Pamela Larocque shares her family's story of loss, love and life in "Ryken's Journey."
"Ryken's Journey" is Larocque's memoir of motherhood, starting with her early days of love, marriage and the impact parenthood made on her life. She fearlessly discusses her brief time with Ryken, including his intense delivery, complicated medical journey and his short, meaningful life.
Larocque story brings to light the disorder that took her son's life, non-kenotic hyperglycinemia, and the profound affect a child's life can make on a family.
"Being a parent is one of the most rewarding and challenging things that has ever happened in my life," Larocque said. "But no one can prepare for the pain of losing a child. After my son passed, I struggled to find a reason for my loss, but writing Ryken's Journey helped me process the situation and make peace with what happened. His story will inspire parents across the globe and help them appreciate the time they spend with their children-no matter how long or short that time may be."
Larocque offers a candid and honest biography of her emotional journey into parenthood with a sick child, sharing her son's powerful story along the way. Ryken's life taught Larocque a spiritual lesson that she now passes on: You do not need to know a child for a lifetime, to love them for a lifetime.
