ORLANDO, Fla.

In 1965, there were 181,000 Catholic sisters in the United States, but that number has been in steady decline ever since, according to the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) at Georgetown. Only about 50,000 sisters serve today, and the population ages rapidly as few young women enter the convent.

Today, the average age sisters take their vows is 39. When Mary Ann Weakley took her vows in 1954, she was just 17. Monastery to Matrimony is a memoir about Weakley's twenty years in the convent and her journey of faith.

"In the book, I share why - at 17 - I made such a drastic decision, and why - if I was happy - I would leave after twenty years. I share stories of my survival, sometimes humorous, and sometimes just scary, as when I left the convent with no job, no wardrobe, and nowhere to live," Weakley said.

Weakley wrote Monastery to Matrimony to be a resource of courage to help people facing life changes.

"A survival theme runs through my life, from the tornado I lived through when I was seven to adjusting to convent life and then adjusting to life outside the convent," Weakley said. "Hopefully the book will encourage people making big decisions in their lives."
