LOS ANGELES, Aug. 24, 2016 /PRNewswire/ After receiving national attention for his "racial farce," Vijay Jojo Chokal-Ingam, brother of Mindy Kaling of The Mindy Project, is publishing his tell-all memoir. Titled Almost Black: The True Story of How I Got into Medical School by Pretending to Be Black, the book is now available for preorder and will be released on September 13.
"I realized I didn't have the grades or test scores to get into med school as an Indian American, so I applied as black to take advantage of affirmative action," writes Chokal-Ingam.
In Almost Black, Chokal-Ingam comes clean about how he shaved his head, trimmed his long Indian eyelashes, joined the Organization Of Black Students, and applied to med schools as an African American. Despite a pitifully low 3.1 GPA, Chokal-Ingam scammed his way into interviews at 11 top medical schools, including Yale, Columbia, Case Western, and University of Pennsylvania. Unsurprisingly, eight of these 11 schools, as well as the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), publicly endorsed racial preferences (i.e. affirmative action) in the Supreme Court's recent Fisher v. University of Texas case.
"It's funny how the med schools so shamelessly flaunt their racist admissions policies," said Chokal-Ingam.
"I don't condone lying," he added. "But when someone discriminates against you, you can fight it like a man or kiss their feet like a slave."
According to AAMC's MCAT and GPA Grid for Applicants and Acceptees by Selected Race and Ethnicity, 2013-2014 through 2015-2016, a medical school applicant with Chokal-Ingam's 3.1 GPA and 31 MCAT had an acceptance rate of 75.5% as black but only 18.1% as Asian. "In other words, someone could pull the same scam today, and the med schools would still fall for it hook, line, and sinker," Chokal-Ingam elaborates.
Additionally, Almost Black includes an expos on Mindy Kaling and her involvement in Chokal-Ingam's racial deception. Tucker Max (I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell), Chokal-Ingam's college classmate, also makes a special appearance in the book.
