Highly imaginative and creative author Michael Middleton pens a thought provoking tale about Thomas, a mysterious and secretive young man who turns up at an isolated roadhouse in Central Australia. Seeing his surroundings through fresh eyes and bearing a secret that he dare not share, he talks with the roadhouse owners. Unaware of his background, they are impressed by his physical skills and his readiness to stay in the area. He accepts a job they offer him. He lives in a caravan behind the roadhouse and befriends some local Aborigines.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Dr. Viktor Kamensky, a university lecturer and ex-cosmonaut, develops a friendship with Toby, an overseas student from Australia. Toby encourages Viktor to break out of the reclusive life he has been living since the death of his wife and unborn child in a road accident. Viktor begins to spread his wings, sailing with Toby on the Neva, going to a reunion in Prague and agreeing to speak at a conference in Hobart, Australia.

That there may be a link between Thomas and Viktor only becomes evident when Ruth, the daughter of the roadhouse owners, comes home on university vacations. She develops a relationship with Thomas and is impressed with his gentle strength, his love of art and music, and his unusual perspective in planet Earth. She encourages him to share his thoughts and perceptions more widely.

Together, they look for ways of doing this. It is then that Thomas discovers an on-line photograph of Viktor as a young cosmonaut. It was as if Thomas was looking in a mirror. He is spooked by the likeness, Ruth notices his change of behavior and under pressure, Thomas tells her an unbelievable story. She thinks he is delusional and in need of psychological help and makes arrangements to heal Thomas of his delusions. The arrangements backfire with unforeseen and far-reaching consequences.
