Merlene Byars-Klutzow Presents Husband's War and Success Story

During World War II, it is estimated that more than four million Indonesians died from starvation and forced labor. Dr. Friedrich Klutzow, a young soldier at the time, survived imprisonment and went on to a life of faith and success.

"Fate, Faith, and Fortitude: How the Burma Railroad Shaped the Life of an Ex-POW" details the account of Friedrich Klutzow and his life experiences, including in-depth looks at his time in a Japanese war camp during World War II. Klutzow worked on the Burma Railroad for the Imperial Japanese Army and his experiences, including the harsh treatments, are exposed.

In addition to his years as a POW, the book shares the amazing transformation of a young soldier from Indonesia to a retired colonel in the U.S. Army and his service during the Vietnam War. Along with his military service, Klutzow has 12 years as a practicing physician-surgeon and obstetrician in rural Maine and Wisconsin and 30 plus years in academic medicine.

The book's title reflects the three ways in which Klutzow's life changed over the years. Events beyond his control, traumatic experiences and the strength to endure difficulties shaped the path of his life and taught him a variety of lessons and skills.
