In this book, R.K.P.'s story is told in a journal format that is written to a friend. Born in Germany before the start of Second World War, R.K.P. describes her happy years as a little girl. At an early age, she learned the pain and sorrow associated with the loss of a loved one, which later led to descriptions of the horrors experienced fleeing during the Second World War. At the age of sixteen, R.K.P. was pushed into immigrating alone to Canada in which a new life began for her. She could not speak the language of her new country. She also found that her aunt had not told her the truth about their living conditions. She was thrown together with a man that was much older than her. To her luck, she fell in love with him and him with her. Yet many events led to a not-so-happy ending and her life became a roller coaster ride.

To live with her husband, she needed to move to the province of Quebec and again had to learn to adapt to a different life style. Religious restrictions and lack of knowledge on birth control found her carrying and giving birth to seven children in eight years' time. Her body was so abused that she cried for help to her parents. A return to her home country was necessary in order to obtain the medical help needed, during which her sister looked after her children. Upon her return, she found her sister pregnant but without a father. The events that followed were difficult, and she found escape and company in singing and painting. Once her life found a balance, more events made her into a disciplined and loving widow.

Each person lives their own story and interprets events in his or her own way. "Two Countries, One Heart" reflects not only the life of a woman who experienced life's ups and down while living it to the fullest but it also bestows on present generations things they can learn from experiences that include love, understanding and forgiveness.
