Journaling has been Brown's way of coping during her husband's struggle with Alzheimer's. From her personal journey she shares to other caregivers who are going through the same experience essential reminders to lessen the pain and burden brought by the disorder.
Caregivers must always remember that they are caring for someone that they love, and before Alzheimer's took over, they had good, loving experiences with this patient, Brown explains. Moreover, they should remember these good times because, "this disease wears you down and you need to take care of yourself or you can't care for the patient."
"Even though the experience of each patient is different, there are similarities that the course of this disease takes and there is no perfect road map to follow, but chapter 5 lists the stages they will probably go through and gives the caregiver some guidelines to follow. Don't forget to ask for help along the way and to take care of yourself," she adds.
With candor and grit, "Take the Good Times" brings to the fore of discussion the experience family, friends and caregivers have in caring for a loved with Alzheimer's.
"This disease does not have a happy ending, as of this date, and they need to take care of themselves because they will have to pick up the pieces and go on with their lives when this is over," Brown says.
