Melanie Young, author of "Getting Things Off My Chest," was recently named as a recipient of two distinguished awards for her work in breast cancer awareness: the Caring Advocate for Recovery through the Arts (CARA) award given by the advisory council of Moving for Life/Moving On from Cancer, and the HandCraft Hero award given by Cheryl Indelicato, third-generation California vintner and proprietor of HandCraft Artisan Collection Wine.

The advisory council of Moving for Life/Moving On from Cancer explains, "The CARA award is given to a deserving cancer care advocate or innovator who recognizes the importance of creativity, healing arts, and physical expression as

important support in recovery from cancer. 'Getting Things Off My Chest,' does just that, and it is closely aligned with our mission -- encouraging women to engage actively in their lives."

HandCraft Heroes was created to honor those individuals whose actions inspire others to seek early detection for breast cancer or support patients undergoing treatment. "You inspire me. Your passion, commitment and actions to help end breast cancer in our lifetime encourage and remind us of what is possible," said Indelicato to the Heroes selected.

Winners of the first annual HandCraft Heroes Breast Cancer Campaign were chosenby an independent panel of judges, and judging criteria was equally weighted between the creativity of the candidate's initiative, the level to which their story inspired others and the perceived impact of the monetary donation award on the breast cancer community.

Melanie Young is a woman in motion, and she did not let a breast cancer diagnosis slow her down . . . just refocus. She used her cancer experience to retool her diet, ramp up her exercise regimen, rid her life from toxic stress and regain a sense of purpose through writing and speaking to empower other women facing the journey. "It took losing my breasts to find my voice," she says.Young is on a year-long book tour across the United States. You can find dates and times on her website, www.melanieyoung.com.
