In “Free,” Brooks conveys her message with an honest, humorous and straightforward voice while touching on several areas of life that women can contemplate and improve. The self-help guide is also colored by Brooks’ own personal experience.
When Brooks realized her feelings of anxiety and depression were caused by the pressure of living her life according to others’ perceptions of her, she decided enough was enough. “One day I examined my life and realized I couldn’t maintain the expectations I’d tried to uphold for so long,” Brooks said. “Once I stopped living for other people, I was free to be myself.”
Writing the book helped Brooks realize that she was her own person, that her past did not define her and that her future was in her own hands. “I hope that by sharing my truth in the book, other women learn to heal and build one another up rather than tear one another down,” Brooks said.
“Free” will help readers take back the reins of their own self-worth and stop living according to others’ expectations of who they are and who they ought to be.
