They say that dogs are a man's best friend. In Mavis E. Smith's new children's book, "Inspector Ace and Sergeant Bubba" (published by Trafford Publishing), however, dogs Ace and Bubba are each other's best friends, sticking together through thick and thin and helping each other along the way. Smith uses the dogs' relationship to mimic a real life friendship for children.

"Books about animals always appeal to children," Smith writes. "Children can readily believe in animals communicating with one another."

Inspector Ace is a big German Shepherd and Sergeant Bubba is a little Pomeranian. When Ace notices a big, mean looking cat, he goes to Bubba for help. Bubba watches T.V. with his owner and knows the big cat is an escaped tiger cub. As the two band together to try to get the tiger cub back to the circus, they run into some mean alley cats who threaten little Bubba, until Ace steps in.

An excerpt from "Inspector Ace and Sergeant Bubba":

"They began to move toward little Bubba, but Ace stepped in front of his best friend and growled. A deep, meaningful growl, and the hair on the back of his neck raised up because he really wanted to look big and fierce."

"I want to reinforce the idea that friends standing up for one another can overcome problems like bullying," Smith explains, "just like Ace does for Bubba with the alley cats."
