Matthew Ayliffe' Creates Fantasy in MISTER BUTTON

Matthew SJ Ayliffe creates a fantastic picture, an easy-going, woolly and weirdly-thrilling adventure spiced with magic and much oomph in Mister Button and the Adventures of Columbus the Charismatic Cockroach. Pharmaceutical Sue, Mister Button's wife invents the cleverist crinkless shirt spray. They live in Misty Mildew Mountains, a town over which Mister Button reigns as mayor. It is Pharmaceutical Sue's new spray that brings the two main characters, Mister Button and Columbus the Charismatic Cockroach, together. The benign, powerfully magical Dr. Stilla Herbalnovice who created or helped create much of Mister Button's world, explains the significance of Sue's invention and how the universe is in great unrest. Though the charismatic Mister Button targets the children's market, teaching cooperation, friendship and compassion, it can easily be appreciated by adults.

Mister Button and Columbus must organise the greatest rescue operation in Misty Mildew Mountain's history with the assistance of all its quirky townsfolk. Readers, meet Mooton Bumple of the majestic temple dedicated to "bonsai treats," the Deli Lama Quality Meat Shop. Meet Negative Nelly with the cast-iron belly; Fried Banana Fred with the oversized head; Barbara the barber and her masculine moustache; Joe, the juicer whose magically delicious juice is given its tang from his sweet armpits; Rocking Chair Rodney with the Rapunzel-like tresses; Dom the down dog and best friend Telly the frog and other denizens of Misty Mildew Mountains.

The dilemma in question happens on the night Pharmaceutical Sue experimentally sprays Mister Button's shirt with the new wrinkle-remover. In the morning Mister Button does the first button up to the second hole, and so on and so forth. It slowly turns into a shirtuation for the usually correctly-buttoned mayor. Even so, Misty Mildew's folks have a knack for the normal that make up their comfortable village life, even if some weird things do intrude:

"Mister Button decided it was time for an unexpected slumber and so he went to bed. But just before he did, he looked into his Morning Thoughts Mirror hoping for an evening answer.
Nothing.
That night, Mister Button slept varied and restlessly, his haunting dreams keeping his weary mind alive. Columbus was riddled throughout them, travelling to faraway places on a small saucer-like disc. A place called Planet Morr soon loomed. Planet Morr's inhabitants appeared to be slowly taken over by another world's race. Next, he was sitting with a woman called Dianne Downward discussing the chocolates she was eating. He then flashed to a scene in a gigantic museum with thousands of peering eyeballs gasping oohs and aaahs at him. Columbus appeared to be in some sort of time orbit travel of other worlds where there were many strange characters to meet and assist along the way.The dream seemed to continue for an eternity. Mister Button felt he was Columbus's home and shared his experiences upon each return."

Turning cliché into unique characters and what sound like advertising one-liners into descriptive imagery, Ayliffe's writing has a magic unique to itself. His work has a rhyming, narrative timelessness that loops in icons and images created out of popular culture to populate his magically endowed demesne, and he carries it off successfully. It is not an easy thing to do, and more magic is in the way Ayliffe does all his awesome tricks as if they were the most natural, easiest things in the world to do. Thus, readers are simply carried away by the chilli-spiced, cut throat-shaved and orange-juiced narrative thread.

Matthew SJ Ayliffe is the eldest of four brothers born to inspiring creative parents in the northern beaches of Sydney, Australia. Matthew or Matt, as he is known to his family and friends, is a musician and poet who trained to be a carpenter. His innate creativity and carpentry skills combined and lead him into a career in film and video set construction. The author began his own company in 2000, he and his collegues produce highly imaginative props and sets for the film and event industry in Australia. He has always been a writer and musician: he has scribed poetry and written songs since he was young.
