Mary Settle Breaks Stereotypes About Disability in Poetry Book

Mary Settle marks her publishing debut with the release of "Rolling Through Teens" (published by AuthorHouse in October 2017), a poetry collection revolving around a Christian teenager in a wheelchair.

Born with cerebral palsy, writing poetry became Settle's way of "blowing off steam." In this book, she shares her experiences and shows that "living in a wheelchair can be both fulfilling and be used to glorify God."

"Rolling Through Teens" is separated into three categories: Cries of a Young Girl's Heart, which includes poems about Jesus; Siblings, poems about Settle's brothers and sisters, both biological and through Christ; and Livin' the Good Life, poems about how great a life with a disability can be. The poems not only inspire people to develop a closer walk with God, but they also put into question many of today's stereotypes about disability.?????

"In almost all other books (and movies and TV shows and society in general), a wheelchair is something that invokes pity. It's something that is 'wrong' with you. In this book, my wheelchair is neither good nor bad. It just is," Settle emphasizes. "The goal of this book is to show that being in a wheelchair is no different than having blue eyes instead of brown."
