In the longest, bleakest winter on record, a flu epidemic strikes. Hospitals are overcrowded, vaccine supplies are depleted and healthcare workers are pushed to their limits. Crops, cattle, children and the elderly are dying in "The Shortness of Life: A Mongolian Lament" (published by Archway Publishing).
"Many tourists know of Mongolia as the Land of the Eternal Blue Sky, which is true of its summer. But there is another side to the country," author Martina Nicolls explains. "I was inspired to write the book after I worked in Ulaanbaatar in 2010 at the request of friends who were fascinated by the country, its culture, and everyday life in the remote capital."
Amid accusations of sabotage, corruption, and misappropriation, health expert Jorja Himmermann finds peace from her apartment window, watching Brik, the unmoving mastiff, and Bruce, the graceful wrestler. Jorja finds advice in the prophecies of message cards and ancient Mongolian proverbs.

Martina Nicolls writes from her own experiences as an independent aid worker in developing countries, primarily in post-conflict countries and those with transitional or emerging governments, but also countries requesting technical assistance. She was in Mongolia for the winter of 2010.
