In her new book, "Marriage and the Love Myth," veteran business leader and wife of 35 years Sukhjiwan Singh says couples can succeed in love if they treat their marriage like a business partnership.

"Arranged marriages are still a common practice where I'm from, and that's why I've always been confounded by the high divorce rates in the United States, where couples can date and get to know each other before making a lifelong commitment," says Singh, who immigrated to the United States from India in 1979.

"Unfortunately, objectivity about the kind of marriage partner who will make you both happy becomes clouded by emotion, but when you consider marriage like a business partnership, one can see more clearly what will work and why."

Singh's book reviews the many ways a troubled marriage can save itself, as well as how singles might view marriage like a business partnership when trying to find Mr. or Mrs. Right.

She counsels those dating to use the 80 percent rule as a guide: Make sure you and your prospective spouse are at least 80 percent compatible on the "big stuff." She emphasizes the importance of communication and maintaining sustained conversation while dating, and visualizing your boyfriend or girlfriend as a lifelong partner.

"This excellent book provides an insightful look at the importance of marriage and the dangers of divorce," says Amazon reviewer Michael Francis Bishop, who gave the book five stars.

"After the wedding bells fall silent, keeping a marriage healthy and strong requires hard work, empathy, and flexibility. Perhaps most importantly, marital success requires a realistic appreciation of what a lifetime commitment truly entails. Romance is important, but the best marriages transcend the romantic and are based on something more profound.

" 'Marriage and the Love Myth' is a practical, commonsense guide to finding and keeping the right partner for a lifetime. All those contemplating marriage, or already discovering its rewards and challenges, should read this book."

Amazon reviewer H.S. Sekhon, Ph.D., also gave Singh's book five stars: "...This book details how troubled marriages can be saved and strengthened. Each part focuses on different dynamics and complexities of relationships and marriage and is explained very nicely with appropriate materials and real life examples."
