To be the type of leader people want to follow, it's important to understand what sets great leaders apart from all the rest-not skills, knowledge, or talent, but heart.
Mark Miller, whose best-selling leadership books are known for their insight and entertaining approach, addresses the single most determinant factor in the success of any leader, in his latest work, "The Heart of Leadership: Becoming a Leader People Want to Follow" (Berrett-Koehler Publishers, ISBN 978-1609949600). The book is set for release today, October 21st.
"The Heart of Leadership" is a story about Blake Brown, an ambitious young professional whose career is stuck. His mentor, Debbie Brewster (whom fans of Miller's work will already know from "The Secret"-co-authored with Ken Blanchard-and "Great Leaders Grow"), sends him to talk with five people, all colleagues of his late father. On his journey, he discovers the importance of leadership character - more significantly, he learns how to cultivate five specific traits all leaders need if they want to become a leader people want to follow.
The early response to the book has been enthusiastic. Best-selling author and former CEO of Thomas Nelson Inc. Michael Hyatt said, "The most important leadership tool you have is not your education, your experience, or your know-how. It's your heart. In this book, Mark provides a clear prescription for using yours to become the kind of leader people want to follow."
The book's official launch is scheduled for Oct. 21 - 25, with a free prelaunch webinar with Mark Miller on October 10 at 4pm (EST). Mark will share how and why it is possible for anyone to be a leader, not just an elite few. Details and registration can be found at greatleadersserve.org.
Mark's three previous books now have more than half a million copies in print. His influence is multiplied by his live teaching events around the world and his influential and highly rated leadership blog - GreatLeadersServe.org. In his words, he also "sells chicken," as vice president of organizational effectiveness for Chick-fil-A, Inc. - where he began as an hourly worker more than 35 years ago.
"The Heart of Leadership" is available for preorder on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. A sample chapter can be downloaded for free on GreatLeadersServe.org. Miller donates all profits from his books to charity.
