COUNTRY HARBOUR, Nova Scotia

In December 1783, shiploads of American colonists, known as Loyalists, traveled to the British colony of Nova Scotia to take refuge in Halifax. Months later, some of these Loyalists would settle in Guysborough, Nova Scotia.

In the new historical fiction "Ruins in the Mist" (published by WestBow Press) by author Marion Timmons, the historical and cultural implications of this group of voyagers are displayed within the narrative of one Loyalist family.

Seven-year-old Tomos and his family live in a small mining village in Northern Wales. One night in 1776, Tomos's father comes to the dinner table with an announcement - the family will move to America for a chance at a better life, despite news of colonial uprising in the states.

Tomos and his family then pack their bags and set sail for Charles Town, South Carolina, where unknown obstacles await. As their time in America becomes ever more difficult, the family flees the war-torn East Coast for refuge in Canada. The family's voyage becomes one of uncertainty as the story of Canada's Loyalist people comes to life in this gripping historical narrative.

"I believe readers are looking for the human side of the stories that lay hidden beneath the covers of the history books," Timmons says. "And so many today are searching for their roots and wondering where they came from, who they are. They are interested in history, especially if it can be brought to life in such a way as this."
