Hoping to help other Cushing's disease patients and their families, Marie Conley releases her funny, intimate and emotional email exchanges with family and friends in the new book, "A Cushing's Collection: A Humorous Journey Surviving Cushing's Disease, Diabetes Insipidus, and a Bilateral Adrenalectomy" (published by Archway Publishing).
Conley, who has worked professionally on the staffs of governors and senators, suffered from nine of the 11 most-prominent symptoms of Cushing's disease when she was diagnosed in 2012. Those included a swollen, red face with bloating under her chin, acne, abdominal swelling and bone thinning, as well as a 19-pound weight gain in three months, despite a heightened exercise and activity routine. It took four specialists in as many months to get a diagnosis. An endocrinologist finally pinpointed the culprit.
"Diagnosed with a rare disease in 2012, I used my emails to families and friends to explain this disease and what I was going through," Conley says, adding that the message she hopes readers receive is: "You can't give up and when things are really crappy and you have a disease that changes every aspect of your life forever, you can still laugh!"
Tom Ridge, the first U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security and Marie's boss during his first campaign for governor of Pennsylvania says: "It is not at all surprising that Marie, one of the most indefatigable people I've ever known, would choose to share her very personal journey in battling Cushing's disease in the hopes that families struggling with this illness could benefit. A Cushing's Collection is a testament to one of Marie's greatest attributes - her selflessness and unflinching desire to help others."
