Author Manfred F. R. Kets de Vries thoroughly investigates the instinct that lies beneath the urge to hunt while trying to reveal something basic and fundamental about human behavior in his newest book, "Talking to the Shaman Within: Musings on Hunting" (published by iUniverse).

"The hunting instinct is hardwired into the human psyche and, for all our sophistication and urbanization, it exerts a powerful influence over the way we conduct our lives even to this day," Kets de Vries says. "In this book, I try to use my psychoanalytical skills to explore why I hunt. I believe no author on this subject has delved so deeply into the psychology that drives modern humans to hunt wild animals."

Kets De Vries unites a dispassionate academic hypothesis with an engaging and colorful narrative into which he has woven stories from his own life, as both an academic and a hunter, in an attempt to present a more balanced view of the heritage and value of hunting. Drawing on depictions of hunting in art and literature throughout the ages, Kets de Vries explores changing trends in human social norms as they pertain to society today.

"While the modern city dweller has cut off ties to nature, this past does not really go away but rather, lies buried in one's self," Kets de Vries says. "Moreover, in today's society, where people are starting to feel the strains of urban living, and with the increasing concern over climate change and sustainable development, there is increasing consciousness and movement back to nature."
