The proverbial brand new start is spiffed up in this engaging tale of a widow who lives a dream she shared with her husband. E.D. Beaty's new book "Maggie's Bed and Breakfast" is what new life is all about, and it is with sharply drawn romanticism and intuitive wit that she regales readers with a bittersweet, lovely tale of the elderly caught up in the opportunity to be young again. This novel of everyday life, love, dreams, family and good friends has a refreshingly innocent dimension rarely found in good fiction these days. Beaty skirts the existential elements, the hard questions of the world, and finds a place that is close to all readers' hearts - perfectly symbolized by the family-run bed and breakfast.

One day, some time after she had buried her husband, Maggie Martin receives a letter from her husband's lawyer asking her what to do with the $20.5 million life insurance policy he took out and she was the beneficiary of. For reasons of his own, Don, who died of cancer, wanted her to live their dream of opening a bed and breakfast by her lonesome.

It is a sure shot at a second life, a new start, one that Maggie accepts with alacrity and with some trepidation. Both do not stop her as, with the aid of family, especially that of her sisters, Marty White and Jasmine Cooks, and close friends, she moves on, finds a perfect house, and shells out the amount to buy it, have it made over and put up the shingle to "Maggie's Bed and Breakfast." It is with mixed emotions - unalloyed pride and a certain something - that she lives her and her husband's daydream...

That certain something turns out to be loneliness. The new widow is kept busy with her business but a heart that has loved once perforce needs to go on loving if life were to be any good. The love element comes in the person of Don's older brother - and a secret about her mom's past serves to transform her into the blushing, nervous young woman who is perfectly ready for new love.
