An excerpt from "We All Made History":
"It was Christmas Eve 1944, when the dreaded call came, ATTACH BAYONETS! We were to spread apart 50' on line along the beach and dig in again. As we were getting ready, the church bells started to ring out. This was against the rules during war. Then we heard singing. It was 'Silent Night' in Spanish. The tiny Filipinos led their procession into our midst. We were dumbfounded. It sure lifted our spirits as we went to our posts. I have not been able to hear this song again without getting teary eyed.
The Jap Paratroopers landed at the Radar Station at Samar, about 20 miles away. I know that this renewed spirit carried us to Okinawa the following Easter Morning. After Japan surrendered we spent the summer in the Tokyo area.
I was discharged, on 30 October 1945, at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. I had my Lapel Button which everyone called the Ruptured Duck."
