Readers of Lois Swann's "The Mists of Manittoo" and "Torn Covenants" are celebrating the release of her long-awaited third novel, "The Painter" (published by AuthorHouse), the story of a young painter overcoming loss to create his masterpiece.

"The novel engages readers by foiling stereotypes, fusing artistic endeavor and technical prowess with human relationships over the course of the protagonist's long life," Swann says.

In the closing days of World War II, as a reward for rescuing Italian masterpieces from Nazi hands, artist Lorenzo Frasca leaves Italy for the United States, hoping to embark on a career as a prominent painter. Out of pity, he has unwisely married Tulia, a cruel and crazed woman with a fragile daughter, Enza. To make ends meet, Lorenzo paints apartment hallways, a soul wearying experience.

Honoring his promise to the priest who has tried to tame Tulia, Lorenzo begins the painting of the parish church, mixing his own pigments from stone, when he meets Anna, a beautiful older woman who becomes his lover and his muse. Brought low by loss, Lorenzo's painted church brings him to the attention and patronage of a Spanish prince who challenges Lorenzo to achieve his masterwork.

"The Painter" takes readers on an artist's grand tour, infusing the narrative with visions of landscapes, paintings, and the complex beauty of the Alhambra. "The novel turns fast-paced living on its head, immersing the reader in the patient work of paint leading to spiritual illumination," writes Swann. "The novel is international in character steeped in attitudes Italian, Spanish, Arabic and American."
