RANDALLSTOWN, Md.
The death of Dr. Otis L. Hairston, Sr. in 2000 touched the lives of the people and congregations he influenced during his life. When his daughter Emma Hairston Belle came across his handwritten sermons and writings, she felt newly inspired and decided to share her father's work with those who loved and respected him.
Her new book, "Words of a Good Shepherd: The Life, Ministry, and Inspirational Messages of the Reverend Dr. Otis L. Hairston, Sr." (published by WestBow Press), compiles these sermons and writings together with a completed biography detailing Hairston's lifelong commitment to God and social justice.
Throughout his lifetime, Hairston strove to be a good shepherd and lead his flock by example. For 60 years, Hairston called for tolerance in his congregation and community and stood up for the dignity, worth and unrealized potential of all mankind. His sermons, speeches and writings encouraged readers to use their gifts and talents to better serve God.
Belle offers her readers a rare glimpse into her father's private and public lives, showcasing his dedication to his family and ministry. Her book reveals Hairston's ongoing dedication to giving to those in need and his compassion, empathy and love for people from all walks of life.
"After reading this book, those who did not have the opportunity to know him will understand and appreciate the life of a humble Christian servant through his own words," Belle says. "We can all learn the importance of faith and the actions that truly help everyone put faith to work and bring meaning to life. Rev. Hairston laid the foundation."
