Legally Blind Author Pens New Book

Tara Nanayakkara never wanted to let her visual impairment stop her from following her dreams, even though her biggest goal was to become an author. She eventually found her inspiration to write by listening to music.

"When I hear a certain type of music, generally new age, movie themes and instrumentals, images are formed in my mind," Nanayakkara said. "Then, as if the computer keyboard turns into a piano keyboard, I feel as if I'm playing the piano as the words spill from my fingers onto the computer screen."

She used this system while writing her most recent book, "Cardboard Dreams," a touching story about love, loss and betrayal as a woman and her nephew embark on separate journeys of unrequited dreams where each finds an underlying spirit of hope and triumph in the face of adversity.

"After Siyara takes in her orphaned nephew, Jake, she realizes she understands Jake better than anyone and begins to love him like a son," Nanayakkara said. "It's inspired loosely from my life as it features a Sri Lankan protagonist who grew up in North America but is still in touch with the culture of her origin. She attempts to balance all aspects of her identity while trying to seek a place of belonging for herself."
